More than 20 years have passed since Charles Keating — he of the savings and loan scandal in the late 1980s — told residents of Marana they’d have an interchange at I-10 within Continental Ranch.

They got it Friday morning, more than two decades after Keating’s promise. Twin Peaks Interchange, and the related Twin Peaks Road linking Continental Ranch with Dove Mountain, are now open to the public.

The public is excited.

“It’ll be major,” said Sunflower resident Jim Moody, a snowbird just back from Chicago, at Thursday’s ribbon cutting. “And for the expansion of business in Marana, too. It’ll be great for everyone all the way around.”

At Thursday’s event on the northeast side of the interchange, Marana Mayor Ed Honea traced the project back to Keating, who bought the former Pepper Tree Ranch, now known as Continental Ranch, aiming to build houses. Keating told people he’d build an interchange.

“People have said ‘why aren’t you getting it done, why aren’t you getting it done?’” Honea said. His reply: “somebody else made the promise, we have to put it together.”

It’s together, now, as one of the first major Regional Transportation Authority projects to be completed.
