Recycle that holiday grease at sites Friday

Don't dump that Thanksgiving grease into the kitchen drain. "Save our sewers," the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department urges, by pouring it into an empty can and bringing it to one of three grease collection and recycling sites on Friday, Nov. 27.

Grease may be transported to any of three locations from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, a release said. The locations are:

Northwest – Pima County Industrial Wastewater Control, 5025 W. Ina Road, a quarter-mile west of I-10;

East – O'Reilly Chevrolet, 6160 E. Broadway Blvd., one block west of Wilmot Road;

South – City of Tucson, Water Plant #2, 1102 W. Irvington Road, I-19, exit on Irvington Road.

Collected grease is being recycled into biodiesel, "a cleaner burning fuel that can reduce our dependence on foreign oil," the release continued.

Picacho I-10 project is completed on time

A two-year, $44 million roadway-widening project on Interstate 10 between Milepost 219 near Picacho Peak Road and Milepost 232 at Pinal Air Park Road has been completed, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The new 13-mile stretch of roadway, which was paved with rubberized asphalt, "ensures continued safety for motorists and reduces traffic congestion between Phoenix and Tucson," the department said in a release.

Capacity has been expanded from two to three lanes in each direction, with shoulders widened to 12 feet. The Picacho Peak Road Bridge, originally constructed in the 1950s, was replaced to meet current traffic capacity and includes widened travel lanes to facilitate traffic flow.

Picacho Peak Road, under the bridge, received a makeover with wider travel lanes, new intersection lighting, and the addition of a new left-turn lane. Other improvements include longer merge lanes for vehicles at the Picacho Peak Road entrance and exit ramps, as well as new sound strips that give a signal if motorists veer out of the travel lane.

Motorists will also see new overhead cantilevered signs that replaced the old signs along the roadway.

The work, conducted by Ashton Contracting, was completed on budget and on time. The project began in November 2007.
