The Oro Valley Police Department Explorers took home a pile of trophies recently from a nationwide competition in Chandler.

"I beam with pride over these guys, they are just outstanding," said Oro Valley Police Sgt. Kevin Mattocks, who helps organize the group.

Explorer programs are designed to provide practical police experience for young men and women ages 14 to 21 who may be considering a career in law enforcement.

The Chandler Police Department sponsored the competition where the Oro Valley group competed in seven events and won four trophies. In the vehicle assault competition, the group took a first-place prize.

The teams are presented with simulated rescue and other police situations on which they are assessed. Despite being one of the smaller and less well-equipped teams, the Oro Valley group took the top spot.

"You have to follow it by the numbers to maintain a tactical advantage," Mattocks said.
