Authorities detonated a pipe bomb in Oro Valley on Tuesday, June 2, and arrested a man on charges related to domestic violence and felony production of marijuana.

Oro Valley Police were called to 10487 N. Fairway Vista Lane at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, when a woman's phone call reporting a domestic dispute was disconnected. At the scene, officers learned the male suspect fled, and was seen driving away from the residential community. He was stopped and put into custody.

Upon entering the house, officers met with the victim and her 9-month-old baby. They then noticed what appeared to be a pipe bomb, as well as a door with a combination lock and an electrical cord running beneath it.

Oro Valley Police left the residence and called for the Pima County Sheriff's Department's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit.

After surrounding neighbors were evacuated, the county unit deployed its robot, which was used to retrieve the suspected pipe bomb. The device was detonated alongside the house, leaving a crater about 2-3 feet in diameter and less than a foot deep.

The EOD unit and Oro Valley Police then made entry to the locked room, finding it filled with multiple, fully-grown marijuana plants along with equipment to cultivate the plants.

Charles A. Zanes, 40, was booked into the Pima County Jail. An investigation is ongoing with regard to the explosives.

At Wednesday night's town council meeting, Conny Culver praised the police department for its response time, understanding and professionalism during the incident.

"We had a pretty scary incident in my neighborhood," Culver said. "You can imagine the upheaval in our neighborhood. It's very scary when they're detonating a pipe bomb on your street," even when the device is contained, she said.

She urged the council to "carefully, carefully evaluate any cuts that may impact" the level of police service.
