Foothills Optimists give $2K to Marana for youth swimming

On Tuesday, the Foothills Optimist Club presented a $2,000 check to the Town of Marana to support the community's swim program for disadvantaged youth.

Mayor Ed Honea received the check at the town pool, 13250 N. Lon Adams Road.

The contribution provides summer-long passes to qualifying children. This is the fourth year the club has supported the program, bringing the total number of children helped to more than 800.

"The town appreciates the support we have received from the Foothills Optimist Club," Honea said. "We are proud to count the club among our outstanding community partners."

The Foothills club is one of 16 Optimist clubs in the Tucson area. Optimist clubs focus on youth-related projects, Respect for Law programs and other community needs.

Formed in 2001, the club meets on the first and third Wednesdays at noon at Macayo's Mexican Restaurant, 7360 N. Oracle Road. The club is part of the Arizona District of Optimist International. Headquarters for Optimist International, founded in 1919, is in St. Louis.
