The Interstate 10 widening project is nearing completion nearly 100 days ahead of schedule.

Last week, during a Women in Transportation seminar, ADOT senior resident engineer Rod Lane and construction manager for Kiewit-Sundt Steve Schmitt said the $210 million project would be completed by the end of this month. At that point, every ramp and underpass may be utilized.

"Our goal was to open up as much as possible at once," said Schmitt. "That has been our game plan all along."

The Interstate 10 widening project started in January 2006. For the first six months, workers organized and reconfigured frontage roads and installed numerous cameras along the project. The cameras were installed to help control the traffic buildup throughout peak hours of traffic flow along the frontage roads, Schmitt said.

The project created four lanes for traffic in each direction, 16 new bridges and underpasses for seven cross streets. During construction, stop signs were replaced on the frontage roads just before off ramps with yield signs.

A few off ramps and underpasses will be closed periodically over the next few weeks as landscaping and the final construction work is completed.

Lane and Schmitt agreed the next project along I-10 will be constructing three lanes of traffic in each direction from Tucson to Phoenix.
