The cardiopulmonary echocardiography department at Northwest Medical Center has been accredited.

The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories has deemed the Northwest Medical Center lab one of the first 1,000 in the country recognized "for its commitment to high quality patient care and its provision of quality diagnostic testing," a release said.

Echocardiographic testing is used to detect and manage many types of heart disease. It is non-invasive, and 10 million such exams are conducted in the U.S. each year.

Echocardiography is a "complex imaging technique" that demands of both the physician and sonographer. Accreditation "recognizes the laboratory's commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease," which is the #1 cause of death in the country
