Directors of the Northern Pima County Chamber of Commerce have endorsed passage of Propositions 403 and 404, the Amphitheater School District overrides, on the Nov. 3 ballot.

The chamber's Public Policy Committee reviewed and analyzed the propositions before making recommendation to the chamber board, a release said.

Proposition 403 is a renewal of the current general maintenance and operations override of 10 percent.

The second override, Proposition 404, is a capital outlay override.

Voting "yes" will result in "reduction and maintenance of class sizes in core classes; expansion of art, music and physical education programs in elementary schools; increased middle and high schools electives and advanced placement courses as well as for computer lab upgrades; desktop computer replacements, network infrastructure upgrades, as well as furniture, fixtures and equipment for new classrooms and schools," the release continued.

"This allows businesses and residents the opportunity for local control to ensure our children are provided excellent educational opportunities in Amphitheater Public Schools," said Ramon Gaanderse, chamber president and chief executive officer.

Without renewal, the operating budget for student education in Amphitheater could drop by approximately $8 million over the next three years. "This would result in unavoidable increases in class sizes, cuts in staff, and significant cuts in educational programs for students in all grade levels," the release concluded.
