Area residents are invited to take another step toward a healthier lifestyle by attending the 2011 Healthiest Town in America spring event and 5K fun walk/run. More than 50 vendors are expected at the free healthy expo scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, at the BASIS Charter School, 11155 N. Oracle Road, in Steam Pump Village. Oro Valley Mayor Satish Hiremath will open the health expo at 9 a.m.

The family-friendly, interactive event also will feature a pet health area with veterinarians and trainers.

“We’ll have all sorts of great things for people and their pets,” said event coordinator MJ Jensen. “Our stage activities will start at 9:30. We’ll have everything from kids’ fitness and fun to Zumba, yoga and tai chi, as well as an interesting skit that deals with dog behavior. And the first 200 people who sign up for our 5K fun walk/run will receive a free pedometer from Oro Valley Hospital.”

The Healthiest Town in America has presented a wide range of health-related information and demonstrations to residents of Northwest Tucson over the past three years. New this year is the Canyon del Oro High School Culinary School, whose members will demonstrate and sell healthy foods.

In addition, the event will serve as a collection site for Dispose-A-Med, presented by the Oro Valley Police Department. Residents are encouraged to bring their outdated and unused medications to be properly disposed.

“You don’t have to live in Oro Valley to attend. Everyone is welcome to try all the fun and healthy experiences,” said Jensen. “Our vendors will set up huge displays with free healthy giveaways and information. It will definitely be worth your while to attend.”
