The Regional Transportation Authority has begun a new transit service in Oro Valley.

Sun Shuttle, available now, offers curb-to-curb service for a fixed rate of $2.50 each direction.

An RTA grant funded the establishment of the new service, which operates weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is open to all riders.

The service area for the new dial-a-ride service extends from Ina Road north to Coronado K-8 School, west to Shannon Road and east to First Avenue. It includes all of Oro Valley.

“This is going to open up opportunities for a people,” said Michele Joseph, director of marketing for Sun Tran, the regional transit system that operates the service.

Sun Tran operates a similar service in the Sahuarita and Green Valley areas.

Joseph said Oro Valley residency is not required to use the service. The vehicles are wheelchair accessible.

The new service differs from Coyote Run, which Oro Valley operates, because it’s not a needs-based transit system. Coyote Run is available for people 62 years and older and those who qualify under the American’s with Disabilities Act.

Pima County also operates a needs-based transit system called Handicar. The wheelchair-accessible vans operate throughout the Tucson area, including all of Oro Valley and parts of Marana.

The RTA also contributes funding to the county transit system.

The new busses will accept cash only until a fare card specific for the dial-a-ride is developed, which should occur in six to 12 months.
