The Oro Valley Optimist Club has rolled out the One Million Pennies for Children’s Cancer program this year.

The group has posted boxes at businesses throughout the Oro Valley community, and is aiming to raise $10,000 to donate to the University of Arizona Children’s Cancer Center.

Jim Oppenheimer, of the Optimist Club, said this is the first year the Oro Valley program is taking part in raising money for child cancer patients, but noted the organization has supported the program on a national level.

To kick off fundraising efforts, Oppenheimer said the Optimist Club sold 100 raffle tickets for $20 each.

With the $2,000 raised from the raffle, Oppenheimer said the Optimist put $1,000 toward the cause, and will hold a total of three raffles to give away the remaining $1,000.

The group has hosted two raffles already, and will be conducting another one in a few weeks.

The OV Optimist has also partnered with local school districts to help in reaching the $10,000 goal.

“This is a big job for us, and we sure could use any help we can get,” said Oppenheimer.

Oppenheimer said they are excited about the program that will help the University of Arizona’s Children’s Cancer Center.

“The UA always needs help, and we are going to do our best to raise this money,” said Oppenheimer.

The Optimist Club plans to raise funds through May.
