Oro Valley Town Manager Jerene Watson has submitted her letter of resignation with plans to take a position as deputy city manager in Flagstaff.
The Oro Valley Town Council is slated to hold an executive session to discuss the issue at the start of its June 1 meeting. The council will likely vote to accept Watson’s resignation, which she submitted on May 22, and will possibly appoint an interim town manager.
Watson plans to officially leave Oro Valley on June 30, the day before the start of a new fiscal year.
“This was not an easy decision as I have gained immeasurable experience over the past four-and-a-half years here with many caring, involved residents and the leadership of elected officials with a heart for the community,” Watson said in her resignation letter. “This has been a highlight of my career to serve in the role of town manager and a special honor guiding public services alongside a highly dedicated organization of employees who work well as a team in a family-like atmosphere with a passion for customer service and strong desire to help make government work for the people we serve.”
Watson added she is looking forward to the challenges ahead of her in Flagstaff.
Watson was listed on May 5 as one of four finalists for the Flagstaff position. The four were selected from 117 applications.
Watson was hired in Oro Valley in 2007 as the assistant town manager. She was appointed interim town manager in October 2009, and appointed by the council to the position in July of last year.
Watson’s current annual salary is $155,648.
