On June 29, Oro Valley police officers questioned three local, teenage boys in connection with homemade, chemical-reaction bottle bombs found in the youths’ neighborhood.

One juvenile, age 14, determined by police to be the responsible party, was charged with misdemeanor misconduct involving explosives and Class IV felony depositing explosives. The remaining juveniles, both 13, were remanded to their parents.

At 12:25 p.m., police investigated a chemical bomb explosion in the 11500 block of North Copper Queen Way. The investigation was prompted by a call from a homeowner who found remnants of a soda bottle filled with caustic chemicals in his front yard that morning; he believed they could be fragments from a “boom” he had heard the night before in the neighborhood, according to Oro Valley police Lt. John Teachout, public information officer for the department.

Police canvassed the neighborhood and were directed by one neighbor to juvenile males living nearby who he believed might be involved. During the police interview, one suspect implicated himself.

Although it was unclear exactly how many bombs were made, during the course of their investigation police were given reason to believe there could have been three; the one that was found in the neighbor’s front yard and another that was discovered by police in a wash across the street from the first. Police suspected a third could have been placed in a community mailbox, and called the Golder Ranch Fire District for assistance. A U.S. Postal Service inspector and team of regional bomb squad investigators also responded.

No bomb was found in the mailbox, and no injuries or damage were reported.
