Smoke scare at hotel

Northwest Fire crews responded to the La Quinta Inn and Suites at 6020 W. Hospitality Rd, near Cortaro and I-10 at 4:35 p.m Saturday after notification of an automatic smoke alarm activation was received by the 911 center from an alarm company.

Enroute, calls to the hotel by emergency dispatchers indicated that there was the odor of smoke, a haze and alarms activated on the 3rd floor of the hotel.

Northwest Fire crews arrived 5 minutes later and evacuated the third floor after investigating crews had a strong smell of smoke on the third floor. 6 guests were on the third floor at the time of the incident and were evacuated without injury.

A full alarm, consisting of 3 engines, 2 ladder companies and support units were brought into the scene to assist in determining the source of the smoke. Crews laid hose lines to the automatic sprinkler systems and placed the ladder company up to the roof in the event that the investigation did reveal a working fire.

After an hour, crews completed a thorough search of the entire building and believe that the source may have been a malfunction with the elevator system. All guests that were evacuated were allowed to return to their rooms. The evaluator remained out of service and maintenance from the hotel will work with repair contractor to make the necessary repairs to the elevator.
