Marana voters turned out in record numbers for the March 8 election, according to the official canvass results confirmed by the town council on March 15.

A total of 4,255 ballots were cast, representing 23 percent of Marana’s 18,493 registered voters. That’s the largest voter turnout for a municipal election, Town Clerk Jocelyn Bronson told the governing board.

Of those ballots, 3,909 were cast “early,” before Election Day.

Mayor Ed Honea, unopposed in his bid for a third four-year term, received 3,888 votes. Bret Summers, who filed for election as mayor and then withdrew his candicacy, had 399 votes.

In the race for two seats on the town council, incumbent Councilwoman Roxanne Ziegler led the way with 2,329 votes (54.74 percent of ballots), followed by challenger Dave Bowen (2,169, 50.98 percent), incumbent Councilman Russell Clanagan (2,122, 49.87 percent) and Jeff Gray (1,019, 23.95 percent).

Ziegler and Bowen received votes greater than one-half the total ballots marked, so they earned election. Bowen defeated Clanagan by 47 votes, according to the canvass results.

 “I want to thank anyone in the audience who participated in the Marana primary election, and put me back on this dais another four years,” Ziegler said last Tuesday. “I’m very honored, and very surprised with the outcome.”

 “I’m thankful for the opportunity to be here,” Honea said. “I’m very proud of this community.”

Bowen was in the audience, and was acknowledged by Honea. He’ll be seated later this spring. Clanagan was excused from last week’s meeting because he had family in town.

In other business, the council:

• Approved a restaurant liquor license for Lupita’s Café, 7077 N. Thornydale;

• Approved special event liquor licenses for the Arizona Paralyzed Veterans of America on Saturday, March 26, for a poker run based at Harley-Davidson of Tucson, 7355 N. I-10 eastbound frontage road; and for the Marana Health Center, for a grand-opening fundraiser to be held May 21 at 13395 N. Marana Main Street;

• Approved a revised social media use administrative directive for town employees, elected and appointed officials; and

• Learned of two awards — recognition for its Camino de Mañana/Twin Peaks road project from the Southern Arizona branch of the American Public Works Association, and honoring of Town Engineer Keith Brann as “Professional of the Year” by the APWA.
