The White Mountain Independent, a top news source for Eastern Arizona communities including Show Low, Holbrook, St. Johns and Snowflake, endorsed Congressional District 1 candidate Ann Kirkpatrick on Friday.

Kirkpatrick, a Democrat, is the favorite in the Aug. 28 primary. The other Democrat in the race is Wenona Benally Baldenergo.

The endorsement said, "Representation of our voting district in its first decade has been like a game of Whac–A–Mole. ... The one person in the race that has tangible ties to the White Mountains is Ann Kirkpatrick, and we think those ties and her moderate voting record in Congress are reason enough to support her."

Earlier this week, Kirkpatrick's likely Republican opponent Jonathan Paton was endorsed by the Arizona Republic. Paton is running against Patrick Gatti and Doug Wade in the primary.

Early ballots went out to voters on Aug. 2.
