Runners, walkers, and wheelchair racers from all 50 states and three different countries flocked to scenic Oro Valley on March 24 for what proved to be another very successful year at the 9th annual Arizona Distance Classic.

This year’s event saw record numbers with more than 1,900 registered entries.

“The Arizona Distance Classic has again seen unbelievable community support for a great cause,” said Race Director David Babner. “This is truly the celebration of the active, healthy lifestyle.”

Oro Valley Mayor Satish Hiremath credited the Arizona Distance Classic as a starting point for the town’s numerous other fitness tourism attractions, such as Oro Valley Aquatic Center and archery range at Naranja Park.

As is tradition, the event kicked off in the parking lot of the hosting business, Ventana Medical Systems, with a pre-run stretch before participants got racing in the Half Marathon Wheelchair and Half Marathon, the first two of seven events offered to also include the Quarter Marathon, Northwest Medical 5K Run/Walk, Kids Fun Run, and One Mile Champions Walk.

The Arizona Distance Classic benefited the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Angola Project and the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation.

With the attraction returning to Oro Valley each year, the town calculated higher-than-ever revenues from sales and bed tax, to the tune of an estimated $559,360.
