A recent report from the U.S. News & World Report has released its annual ranking of the best high schools in the country and Arizona has three schools in the top ten, a feat accomplished by no other state.

The report ranks these Arizona schools as follows:

2nd – BASIS Scottsdale

5th – BASIS North (Tucson)

7th – University High School (Tucson)

BASIS North in Tucson was also named third best science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) school.

The American Institute for Research evaluated America’s high schools based on three main criteria.  The institute looked at overall student performance on state-mandated assessments such as the AIMS test,  how effectively the schools educated minority or economically disadvantaged students and schools’ participation in and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams to assess how well schools prepared students for college-level course work.

Senator Kimberly Yee, Chair of the Senate Committee on Education, was delighted to see three Arizona schools on this year’s ranking. “Arizona should be extremely proud of these outstanding schools which have been nationally recognized for providing our students an extraordinary education here in Arizona.  These schools are a model of what Arizona is doing right in advancing what all Arizona students deserve…a world class education.  The teachers, parents and students in these school communities should be commended for their hard work,” said Yee.

University High School in Tucson is a Special Projects High School, which serves students who are academically focused and intellectually gifted and provides curriculum and social support not offered in a comprehensive high school.

“The schools recognized in this new report represent traditional neighborhood schools and charter schools that are inserting innovation into education and thinking outside of the box.  This is further evidence that school choice works here in Arizona.  Arizona continues to lead the way in school choice across the country, allowing parents the ability to choose the best school that fits their child’s educational needs.  Our state’s young people have the opportunity to attend some of the best high schools in America,” said Yee.
