Couple robs Ina and Oracle Safeway with stun gun

Sources say an externally contracted loss prevention employee will not be rewarded benefits, including workman's compensation, after he was tasered while attempting to prevent a burglary on Sept. 21.

The man was an employee of Advanced Security, according to Safeway's Director of Public Affairs Nancy Keane.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department responded to the Ina and Oracle Safeway location at 6:35 p.m. regarding the robbery.

Deputies learned that at 6 p.m., a male and female entered the store together. The loss prevention employee  observed the female suspect place two bottles of liquor into her purse as her male counterpart stood by.

When the suspects walked out of the store, the loss prevention officer stepped in front of them and identified himself. The female reached into her purse and pulled out an electronic stun gun device. She pressed the device against the chest of the loss prevention officer and activated it, causing him to fall down. This incapacitated the store employee and both suspects left the area in a white vehicle.

Sources say because the loss prevention employee violated company code by stepping within three feet of the suspects, he will not be awarded benefits, despite the fact he has not returned to work due to injuries related to the incident.

The female suspect is described as:

• Light skinned African American

• Wearing a green shirt, jean shorts, and black tennis shoes

The male suspect is described as:

• Hispanic

• Wearing a black t-shirt, jeans, and a black hat

The Sheriff’s Department Robbery/Assault Unit is currently trying to identify the suspects involved in this armed robbery.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call 88-CRIME or 9-1-1.
