Last week, several instances of graffiti were found in the boys’ bathrooms at Marana Middle School. Among various inappropriate images and phrases, one stood out: a written statement about a school shooting planned for Tuesday, Dec. 5.
The school contacted the Marana Police Department which started an investigation into the matter, but no substantial evidence could be found of a shooting being planned.
“I am asking our parents to contact school administration or the Marana Police Department if you have any information related to this problem.” Lerona Dickson, principal of Marana Middle School, said in a letter to parents on Monday. “I want to assure you that school administration is continuing to work closely with the Marana Police Department regarding this issue.”
Parents were also told to discuss the seriousness of graffiti and these kinds of threats with their students, and to inform the school of any possible information on the statement found in the bathroom.
Marana Middle School is following its regularly planned schedule for the day, though due to the threats there will be an additional police and District School Safety Support presence on campus.
“We do not take incidents, such as this, lightly at our school.” Dickson said.
