A standoff with police ended with a 65-year-old male subject committing suicide in North Tucson Tuesday afternoon.

Police found Neil McHugh, 65, dead inside the home after the more than five-hour standoff.

According to officials on the scene, two real estate agents and a civil officer had gone to serve the man an eviction notice at at 8500 N. Freeman Ln., when he allegedly fired several shots in their direction.

Tim Brunekant, of the Marana Police Department, confirmed multiple shots were fired, but no one was injured.

"All of them got to the ground immediately to avoid being hit, and called the police," he said.

The suspect had barricaded himself inside the home.

Around 1:30 p.m., Brunekant said the Pima County Regional SWAT team received the search warrant required to enter the premises.

With multiple police and fire crews creating a staging area at the Desert Son Community Church on Contaro Farms Road, just south of the home, it became a waiting game.

Area residents were warned of the armed suspect and told to evacuate the area. When the first shots were fired, the Desert Son Community Church had between 15 and 20 children at their daycare center.

Youth Pastor Josh Penrod, of the church, said he did not see anything, nor did he hear the shots, but when they were alerted about the problem they went into immediate lockdown.

The preschool-aged children were later escorted by sheriff's deputies to a safer location at a nearby church.

Penrod said the church took all necessary precautions, and no one was hurt in the incident.
