Last week, the Marana Unified School District held its annual district-wide spelling bee at Mountain View High School.

More that 5,500 students in the district competed for one of the 28 spots in the competition.

The top spellers from fourth through eighth grade competed in the bee on Jan. 25.

Jeremy Parry, a seventh-grader from Marana Middle School, placed first by correctly spelling “sustenance”.

Rattlesnake Ridge Elementary School fifth-grader Grace Hala’ ufia placed second. Samantha Kidd, a sixth-grader at Roadrunner Elementary School, placed third. Savanna Kelly, an eighth-grader at Tortolita Middle School placed fourth, and Audrey Mason, a fourth-grader at Coyote Trail Elementary School, placed fifth.

The top four spellers and one alternate will proceed to the Pima County Spelling Bee, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m., at the Berger Performing Arts Center at the Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind, 1200 W. Speedway Blvd
