At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10 a man described as "an older Caucasian male" walked into the BBVA Compass bank located at 7645 N. La Cholla Blvd. and demanded money.
According to Pima County Sheriff's Department Deputy Scott Gross, the man, later identified by authorities as 66-year-old David Allen, held up a bag claiming it contained explosives. He was given an undisclosed amount of money, dropped the bag and began to walk towards the nearby Foothills Mall.
A deputy patrolling the area made contact with Allen in front of the ByeBye Baby department store. Allen held a second bag towards the responding deputies, claiming it also contained explosives. Authorities de-escalated the situation and Allen threw the bag towards the store, then got down on the ground.
Police detained Allen, and locked down the immediate area. Bomb squad officers responded and determined that the second bag to contain a hoax device, and that the first bag was empty. Further information regarding the bags was not made available.
Allen is charged with six counts of aggravated assault and one count of armed robbery, with federal charges pending-and booked in the Pima County Adult Detention Complex.
No other suspects were involved and no one was injured in the course of the robbery and arrest. No motive has yet been determined, and the investigation is still ongoing.
