On Monday, March 17, at 8:20 p.m. the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call from a homeowner in the 2600 block of West Canyon Street, Apache Junction. The caller reported numerous male suspects attempted to kick in the back door to his residence and shots had been fired. Several deputies responded with the emergency lights and sirens. Our Dispatch received additional 9-1-1 calls from other residents in the neighborhood who reported hearing shots fired and one of the callers advised of a male subject who had been shot and was laying in a yard.
When deputies arrived on scene, they spoke with the four residents inside of the home and some the other deputies and medical personnel treated Sal Anthony Olmos (age 19 of Mesa.). Sal had a non-life threatening shotgun wound to the upper part of both of his legs.
It was determined during the investigation, Sal Olmos and two other suspects committed an attempted robbery and home invasion. According to Sal, he was owed a large sum of money by one of the individuals inside of the home. Sal admitted he went to the home with two other suspects to collect the money. He admitted they were all armed and brought “black zip-ties” so they were “prepared for whatever.”
When the 59-year-old homeowner heard the men at his back door he looked on the family’s security camera and saw three unknown suspects wearing hoods and holding guns. He then heard the suspects start kicking at the door. The homeowner used a shotgun and fired one round through his backdoor. Another one of the residents inside of the home fired one shot from a pistol through the door after he saw laser sights pointed at his head from the individuals outside. The three suspects outside fired rounds from three different caliber handguns inside of the residence. After the gunfire exchange, the three suspects ran from the house. Sal was not able to continue running and was found in a neighbor’s yard. The other two suspects kept running.
In the yard where Sal was found, detectives recovered black zip-ties, a hooded sweatshirt and a .45 caliber handgun.
