Universal Learning Centre fundraiser at the Hilton

Universal Learning Centre, a not-for-profit organization that builds and sustains library learning centers in developing nations, invites the community to attend the organization’s upcoming Fundraiser Gala with dinner, dancing and a dance performance.

The Gala will be held at the Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort, in Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday, Nov. 16.  A cocktail reception and silent auction featuring Haitian street art will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner, dancing and a dance performance, courtesy of the Sonoran Ballroom Academy.

Every dollar raised from the event will benefit ULC.  Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.bit.ly/HsdRd8.

“In Haiti, my birthplace, there haven’t been notable advances made in education, healthcare or poverty alleviation during my existence so far,” said Dr. Alex Westerband, ULC Board of Directors’ Vice Chair, of Tucson, Arizona. “Haitian children born today are not being raised into a digitally connected world because of a lack of infrastructural development. ULC members share a common belief that everyone deserves an education--that powerful tool enabling marginalized adults and children to lift themselves out of poverty.”

Having opened its first site in December 2009, a month prior to the earthquake that devastated Haiti, Universal Learning Centre now has three successfully operating centers, all of which are the first of their kind in their communities. The organization recently opened its first computer and media lab at its largest site in Ouanaminthe, Haiti.
