A 59-year-old spectator at the Accenture Match Play Championship suffered cardiac arrest and died Wednesday, according to the Northwest Fire District.

The man and his wife, visiting from the State of Washington, arrived around 11 a.m. and were on their way to the first tee box when the man fell to the ground and was in cardiac arrest.

An officer from the Marana Police Department and another spectator were nearby and immediately began resuscitation efforts.

EMS standby paramedics from the Northwest Fire District with an ambulance crew on site from Southwest Ambulance arrived within two minutes and continued resuscitation on the man before transporting him to Oro Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Northwest Fire District has contracted with the PGA TOUR for Emergency Medical Services since the tournament began. The district maintains at least two teams of paramedics that are fully equipped with ALS gear to treat any medical emergency. Southwest Ambulance also maintains a unit on site to transport any patient who requires emergency room evaluation and treatment for an injury or illness.
