The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona is offering to pick surplus citrus from homes and businesses in the greater Tucson and in Green Valley, Sahuarita areas between January 22 and April 30, 2013. This service is known as “Gleaning” or the harvesting of food that would otherwise go unused.

To schedule someone to come to a home or business and pick the citrus, in the greater Tucson area, contact Lou Medran at (520) 449-8340 and in the Green Valley, Sahuarita area call the Branch Food Bank at (520) 625-5252. Those able to do their own gleaning may call to schedule a pick-up or drop off the citrus at 3003 South Country Club Road, Tucson, AZ 85713. In Green Valley-Sahuarita, the citrus may be dropped off at the Branch Food Bank at 250 E. Continental, Green Valley, AZ 85614.

“It’s any easy way for someone to help their neighbors in need,” said Bill Carnegie, President/CEO of the Community Food bank. “There are thousands of orange, lemon and grapefruit trees in Southern Arizona with citrus products that go to waste each year. These items can go a long way to help feed the hungry in our communities. “

For questions and additional information, please contact Lou Medran at 449-8340.

Unfortunately, the freezing temperatures damaged SOME of our Tucson citrus crop and The Community Food Bank has cancelled there 2013 Gleaning program before it got started. Like Bill Carnegie said thousands of citrus fruit go to waste and although 1000s were damaged 1000's of fruit still can be gleaned and Iskashitaa Refugee Network has been helping the CFB for 9 years gleaning year round- not just citrus. We wil harvest undamaged citrus fruit in 2013 and have been harvesting since November 2012 early citrus. Please visit www.HarvestTucson.org or call Sheila @440-0100
