With food prices up, gas prices still high and clothing prices expected to jump 10 percent in the next months, families continue to search for ways to save and earn money. One local mom is helping with a big Just Between Friends children’s consignment event that will take place July 28-30 in Tucson.

Shawna Wilfert is gearing up for her seventh sale here. The Oro Valley mom, who runs the JBF events in both Tucson and Phoenix, is proud of the high standards set for merchandise that will be sold locally.

“We inspect everything. We inspect all the toys and make sure they and other equipment have batteries because no mom wants to bring home a toy without batteries,” she said.

The sale site at 1365 Grant Road in East Tucson has 15,000 square feet of space to fill with thousands of consigned items for children.

Just Between Friends was created in 1997 in a living room in Tulsa, Okla., when Shannon Wilburn, a mother of two young children, and her friend Daven Tackett hosted a sale, while inviting 17 friends to be consignors. Promoted only in their neighborhood, the gross sales reached approximately $2,000. That’s when the idea caught on.

The local event also offers deep discounts on gently used items while also providing a chance for families to make money. It helps families “turn their clutter into cash” by selling new and gently used items their family has outgrown. Consignors earned an average of $300 each at the sale in January 2010, said Wilfert.

Consignors price their own items using an easy, online bar code system. Then, they earn 65 percent of the sale price or, if they volunteer at the event, they earn 70 percent. And all of the money from JBF stays in the local community and goes back into the pockets of local families.

Shoppers can typically save between 50 and 90 percent on everything they need to raise a family: clothes for infants, children, teens, and expectant mothers, baby equipment, baby and kids’ furniture, DVDs, games, books, toys, boutique items, and more.

There is still time to submit items for sale. Families interested in consigning can sign up at www.jbfsale.com.
