On Jan. 30 at 10:10 a.m., officers from Operations Division Midtown responded to the 2700 block of North Swan Road regarding a 911 call from a female who advised she had just strangled her 10-year-old son. Upon arrival, officers located the boy inside the residence suffering from serious signs of trauma. Officers immediately began emergency first aid on the child until personnel from the Tucson Fire Department arrived to assist. The boy’s mother was taken into custody inside the residence without incident. The child was transported to a local area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Detectives from the Dependant Child Unit responded to continue the investigation. They determined that the mother and 10-year-old boy were the only ones home at the time of the incident. The mother used an extension cord to strangle the child. She then called 911 to advise what she had done. The mother was identified as 49-year-old Jean Cataline. She was booked into the Pima County Jail for one count of Child Abuse and one count of Attempted 1st Degreee Murder.

On the morning of Feb. 7, the child succumbed to his injuries. He was identified as 10-year-old John Cataline. Next of kin have been notified. Ms. Cataline has now been charged with 1st Degree Murder.
