The Town of Oro Valley is hosting National Night Out tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Steam Pump Village Shopping Center on North Oracle Road, at North First Avenue.

With more than 36 million people participating, National Night Out is a family-friendly special crime and drug prevention event held annually since 1983 in communities across the United States and Canada.

Oro Valley's National Night Out, which is being held in partnership with the Town of Oro Valley, the Oro Valley Police Department and the Oro Valley Target retail store, will focus on safety and will showcase more than 30 area businesses/organizations that are actively promoting child safety.

Participants will enjoy public safety displays including: police canines, Golder Ranch Fire vehicles, motorcycle officers, police Explorers and a host of other safety-related booths.

In addition, the winners of the children's safety art contest will be announced at the event. Youngsters were invited to create a work of art that represents their perspective on safe practices related to crime and drugs in conjunction with Oro Valley's National Night Out event.

Prizes will be awarded in the following age groups: up to 8 years, ages 9-12 and ages 13-18. The panel of judges includes Oro Valley Mayor Satish Hiremath, Oro Valley Chief of Police Daniel Sharp, Golder Ranch Fire District Chief Randy Karrer, and Erik Collins from Target Corporation.
