The Marana Heritage Conservancy bus tour, “Surprising Marana” was off and running on Saturday, March 31, beginning at Crossroads Park.  The big yellow school bus carried more than 30 people at each of the tour times, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Guide John Scheuring began with the lime kilns along Silverbell Road, next checking out the bat colony on Ina Road at the Santa Cruz River bridge.

The group then visited the Borquez Ranch site, Hohokam, Los Morteros, Butterfield and Anza camp sites.

Many of the tour participants were surprised by the number of historical sites and information available within the Marana area.

Scheuring scouted historical sites for former town historian, Ora Mae Harn.  These sites became part of the historical compilation, “Pioneering People on a Corridor of Change”, available through the Marana Heritage Conservancy.

Continuing tours, the route included farming in Marana, the Prisoner of War Camp, UA Experimental Farm and a visit to the Exhibit Room and Council Chambers at the Marana Civic Center.

The Marana Heritage Conservancy, a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization, maintains the Exhibit Room and is available for private tours every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Visit the Marana Heritage Conservancy website for contact information, www.maranaheritage.org.
