The body of an infant was discovered in a remote desert area northwest of Toltec Road on Interstate 10 early Tuesday morning.

This morning at 5 a.m., detectives from the Pima County Homicide Unit, along with members of the Southern Arizona Rescue Dogs Incorporated searched the area based on information they received from interviews with the infant’s parents.

After the search, detectives discovered what is believed to be the remains of Vanessa Martinez.

Being held in connection to the infant’s death are her parents, Olivia Paige Martinez, 20, and Jonathan Niles Kesterson.

Kesterson was apprehended in San Diego on April 12, by the San Diego Police Department on unrelated charges.

After being processed through the San Diego County Jail, comments were made to corrections staff regarding the death. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department contacted the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to provide information related to the investigation.

Homicide detectives flew to San Diego to interview Mr. Kesterson. Based on the initial interview, warrants were issued for both parents, with charges related to the death of their child.

Martinez was extradited to the Pima County Adult Detention Center on Monday, April 23.

The incident is still under investigation.
