At approximately 1:44 p.m., the Northwest Fire District and Pima County Sheriff’s Department responded to a multiple 911 calls regarding a vehicle colliding into a home near La Cholla Boulevard and Ruthrauff Road.
According to Northwest Fire Public Information Officer Adam Goldberg, the driver, a man in his 60’s, lost control of his vehicle while presumably heading eastbound along Ruthrauff Road. His vehicle penetrated the front of the brick home, capturing the male home owner, who was inside the residence, underneath the vehicle.
Upon arrival, fire rescue crews removed the unconscious driver from the vehicle. The home occupant, in his 70's, was freed from beneath the vehicle shortly after. Both men were removed from the scene within 16 minutes and transported to the Trauma Center at the University of Arizona.
The driver is listed in critical condition, while the homeowner is in serious but stable condition. The homeowner’s wife was not at home at the time of the incident, and no further parties were harmed in the accident.
The home was severely damage, and a technical rescue team with Northwest Fire set up temporary emergency building shoring to prevent the structure from collapsing. Nobody will be allowed to reenter the home until the building is deemed structurally sound.
The investigation as to what caused the driver to lose control is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department. Goldberg said there is a suspicion the driver lost control after experiencing a medical emergency
