At 5:22 p.m. Northwest Fire District and Tucson Fire Department units were dispatched to the eastbound frontage road of I-10 near Sunset Road after a bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle.

The rider was a registered participant of this year’s El Tour De Tucson perimeter bicycle race. He was taking part in the 107 mile race.

Northwest Fire paramedics arrived within 5 minutes and found a 59 year-old male patient that sustained critical injuries as a result of the impact of the car traveling along the frontage road.

Paramedics’ initiated advanced life support measures but were unsuccessful in their attempts at resuscitation. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene according to Northwest Fire District's Adam Goldberg.

The victim has been identified as 59-year-old John S. Henderson of Tucson.

Tucson Fire paramedics evaluated and transported the male driver of the car to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. The condition of the driver and the indications for the treatment and transport will be released by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) when the investigation has been completed.

The off-ramp at Sunset eastbound remained closed for several hours after the incident for the investigation.
