The Northwest Fire District responded to a three-vehicle accident on Tangerine road near Camino De Oeste at 10:55 a.m.

Off-duty Northwest Fire Captain Chris Cole and an EMS training officer, who came upon the accident just after it occurred, found five patients with moderate to severe injuries.

"It is extremely rare to find this amount of damage and more than one vehicle that rolls in a single accident," said Cole.

The first paramedic engine company arrived within four minutes to find three cars were involved in the accident, two of which had rolled, with one of the cars with severe damage.

A full-sized Chevy pick-up, which sustained the severe damage, had a single occupant who required extrication with the "jaws of life"

Crews were able to free the male patient within 19 minutes. He was immediately flown to the University of Arizona Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

According to Adam Goldberg, a spokesman for the Northwest Fire District, there was an airbag that deployed in the truck, but it has not been determined if the occupant was wearing a seatbelt.

Two male patients in a Truly Nolen work vehicle that rolled were transported in serious, but stable condition via ambulance to UMC's Trauma unit.

An elderly couple from New Mexico in a mini-van were treated and transported to the trauma unit in stable condition with minor injuries. The minivan also rolled over in the accident. The couple did have their seatbelts on at the time of the accident, said Goldberg.

A Hazardous Materials Engine was called to the scene to evaluate the pest control truck for any chemical hazards, but found no leaks or hazardous conditions.

Marana Police was on the scene to conduct the investigation into the cause of the accident. The roadway was closed for more than an hour.
