One year ago, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head during a Congress on Your Corner event at the Safeway on Ina Road.

Today, Giffords is planning to participate in a candlelight vigil at the University of Arizona, and has spent the weekend paying respect to those who died, and those who were injured on Jan. 8, 2011.

Through Twitter and Facebook posts, Giffords' husband Mark Kelly has kept the public updated on what Giffords is doing during her visit to Tucson.

Giffords has paid respects to slain aide Gabe Zimmerman at Davidson Canyon, and she went on to stand at the Safeway shopping center where she was shot one year ago, even showing Kelly the parking space she had chosen.

On Saturday, Safeway unveiled a memorial for the shooting victims. Without a ceremony, the memorial was unveiled at some landscaping near the store entrance.

Safeway Phoenix division president Dan Valenzuela issued a statement saying the company wants to make sure the shooting site remains respected.

At 10:11 a.m. on January 8 last year, Jared Lee Loughner opened fire, wounding Giffords along with 12 others, and killing six people, including Zimmerman and nine-year-old Christina Taylor Green.

Kelly has kept the public updated as Giffords moved through what has been an emotional weekend for the people of Tucson, while showing her miraculous recovery in one year.

From learning to walk and talk again, to standing on the Congress floor to vote, Giffords continues to amaze the world.

Today, at 10:11 a.m., marking the first anniversary of that tragic day in Tucson, bells will be rang throughout the community in honor of the victims. The bells are part of the Ben's Bell program.

As part of a remembrance for Zimmerman, much of the Tucson community participated in BEYOND events on Saturday.
