On Jan. 31, at about 5 p.m., a report was made at the Tucson Main Police Station at 270 South Stone in reference to an inappropriate relationship between an adult and a juvenile. A mother reported to police that she located inappropriate sexual conversations between her 15-year-old son and a 26-year-old female on his Facebook account.
Detectives from the Child Sexual Assault Unit learned that the victim and the suspect had been having inappropriate sexual conversations via Facebook since the summer of 2012.
The relationship progressed to inappropriate sexual correspondence between the two using Skype.
Detectives also learned the suspect is a computer lab assistant at Rio Vista Elementary School. The victim had previously been a student at Rio Vista Elementary and at that time, the suspect was working at the school as well.
Detectives did not find any evidence of contact or a relationship between the two prior to last summer.
The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Barbara Bergquist. She was booked into the Pima County Jail for one count of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of a Minor and one count of Furnishing Harmful items to a Minor. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
The Tucson Police Department urges parents to continually monitor their children’s Facebook and any other social media accounts they have access to. Knowing and monitoring your child’s online friends, connections and conversation is crucial for their safety.
