Silverbell Rollover

Fire crews had to use the jaws of life to rescue a 39-year-old man who was trapped under his vehicle after an accident on Silverbell Road Sunday night.

The Northwest Fire District responded to a vehicle rollover in the 5300 block of North Silverbell road at 9:46 p.m. Sunday night.

The first arriving engine company found the driver, a 39 year-old male, partially ejected from the Toyota Tacoma pick-up and trapped underneath.

Crews called the NWFD's Heavy Rescue to the scene to assist in the removal of the trapped patient. This special services apparatus is equipped with a set of heavy lift air bags and additional equipment that may have been needed to lift the car off the victim. The initial arriving Engine Company was successfully able to free the man using the jaws-of-life extrication equipment by lifting the car enough to free the man.

The extrication took 13 minutes from the time they arrived at the scene.

The patient was transported to University of Arizona's Central Campus Trauma Center, where is is listed to be in serious but stable condition.

The Pima County Sherriff's Department was on the scene to investigate the cause of the accident.
