The American Legion’s Oro Valley Post 132 and Auxiliary Unit 132 have been recognized as the “Outstanding Community Partners of the Year” by the Arizona National Guard (ANG).  This statewide recognition was awarded during the 2012 Arizona National Guard Soldier Awards Banquet in Phoenix, Oct. 20s.

The prestigious award was presented to Ed Davis, commander of the Oro Valley American Legion Post and Onita Davis, president of the Auxiliary Unit by Major General Hugo Salazar, The Adjutant General, ANG.

The recipient of the award is selected from among the hundreds of Arizona National Guard community partners from across the state. The Oro Valley Post and Auxiliary Unit were selected for the positive impact they have had on the Guard members and families of the 2-285th Assault Helicopter Battalion during their deployment to Iraq and of A and B Companies of the 1-285th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion during their current deployment to Afghanistan.

The Oro Valley Post and Unit have earned a reputation for their hands-on personal involvement in veterans and community programs. This approach has led to an extraordinarily successful partnership with the Guard members and their families as reflected in support for sendoff ceremonies, the Guard’s first Battle Update Briefing for family members, ongoing social activities and monthly comfort packages.

“We consider the American Legion Oro Valley Post and Unit, members of our family”, said Major Peter Huble, Executive Officer of the 1-285th Battalion based at Pinal Air Park, Marana, AZ.

The American Legion, the nation’s largest war time veterans’ service organization, and the Auxiliary, the world’s largest patriotic service organization of women, have been fulfilling their commitment of service to veterans, military personnel and their families and the local community for 93 years. They are non-profit, charitable service organizations chartered by the U.S. Congress.
