Pima County Public Health Director Francisco García has been named to a federal task force designed to improve the health of all Americans.

García’s clinical expertise was cited as one of the reasons he was asked to sit on the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which is an independent panel composed largely of primary care providers with expertise in prevention, evidence-based medicine and primary care. The panel conducts scientific evidence reviews of clinical preventive services, such as screening, medications and counseling, and develops recommendations for clinicians and health providers.

García, who specializes in cervical cancer prevention and practices at the University of Arizona Medical Center – South Campus, holds a Master’s Degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University. He assumed the role of Public Health Director for Pima County at the beginning of January.

This is not the first time García has had a role in shaping health policy at a national level, having served on an Institute of Medicine panel advising the Obama administration about coverage for women’s health services.

“This nation faces a number of health challenges, but also has within its grasp a number of opportunities,” García said. “Among them is the ability to highlight the importance of prevention in primary healthcare.

García’s term will run through December 2016. For more information about the panel, please visit www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org.
