Tim Corkery, Tortolita Middle School eighth grade social studies teacher, is a finalist for the state-level Veterans of Foreign Wars Middle School Teacher of the Year award. The award is presented annually to an educator who demonstrates outstanding teaching skills, patriotism, and dedication to the well-being of learners, colleagues, and veterans in the community.

On Jan. 12, Corkery attended the Veterans of Foreign Wars state banquet held at Tucson Hilton East. At the banquet, the state Veterans of Foreign Wars Middle School Teacher of the Year was announced. The winner will proceed to VFW National Headquarters for consideration in the national awards contest.

The state teacher of the year is selected following a multi-level selection process. Corkery was first chosen by VFW Post 5990 (local level) as the Middle School Teacher of the Year. This selection advanced him to the District 5 (regional) level where he was named VFW District 5 Middle School Teacher of the Year at a recognition ceremony held at Post 4903 on December 9, 2012. The regional honor encompasses recognition from nine local VFW posts.

Corkery served in the United States Navy for 24 years as a pilot flying several missions in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic. He also served as a P-3C Orion instructor before moving on to his teaching career in August of  2011 at Tortolita Middle School. Corkery is the father of five children and enjoys being a little league coach and also a Sunday School teacher.
