Enjoy the sounds of big band, sights of fabulous fashion and tastes of delicious food and cocktails during an evening of music and culinary arts.

Cocktails and Classics, a charity benefit inspired by the swing era of music and retro styles, will take place on Friday, April 19 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Tucson Mall.

The second annual event, presented by Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance, will feature a live big band performance, vintage-inspired clothes and cuisine.

An elegant outdoor backdrop will set the scene for a night of glamorous fashions from the mall’s retailers, salons and jewelers, taking place at the Tucson Mall fountain plaza by The Cheesecake Factory.

The red carpet runway show will feature the mall’s retailers, showcasing creative and classic looks. Restaurants will provide sweet and savory appetizers, desserts and drink samplings for guests prior to the runway show.

Tickets for the show are $35 per person that includes hors d’oeuvres and menu samplings, desserts, cocktails, runway show, live music and official event goodie bag filled with fashionable coupons, beauty samples and more.

Music and dance

Attendees can “cut a rug” on the patio dance floor, learning classic swing moves from professional dance instructor Jeannie Tucker, and listen to sounds of the 16-piece Memories Big Band.

Playing the greats, like Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and Duke Ellington, Memories Big Band is a treasure of American music from the 1940s to today. The band members have all shared the stage with the legendary musicians of the past. Established circa 1968, the swing band has attracted numerous talented musicians under the leadership of Cliff Juergens, one of the original Kayedettes and trumpet player in the Sammy Kaye Orchestra.

The Marana capital improvements improvements are expected to take years to complete as Marana finds the best plan of action to complete the projects and fund the improvements. Do you think this is a good idea?

The town of Marana is looking at ways to do capital improvements to the oldest neighborhoods in Marana. Over the next few months the town will survey older neighborhoods and see what amenities they need and form a plan to make sure neighborhoods have paved roads, sidewalks, adequate drainage, lighting and even pocket parks. “We want to make sure that every neighborhood has a base standard for infrastructure,” said Marana Town Manager Gilbert Davidson. The improvements are expected to take years to complete as Marana finds the best plan of action to complete the projects and fund the improvements. Do you think this is a good idea?

How do you feel about a potential memorial art project to honor our community’s bravest men and women?

During the Jan. 20 town council meeting, a vote was unanimously passed to look into the feasibility of a “Memorial Public Art Project,” at the request of Oro Valley resident Dick Eggerding to potentially be placed somewhere in the town to honor military veterans and first responders. Though no concrete plans were then ready to act on, there was a show of overwhelming support for such project from residents and staff alike during the council meeting. In an effort to poll to community at-large, The Explorer would like to know how you feel about a potential memorial art project to honor our community’s bravest men and women.
