American Legion Oro Valley Post 132 sponsored the 75th United States Constitution oratorical contest on February 15, 2012, at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy located at 9500 N. Oracle Road.

Four students participated in the contest and performed at a very high level, which made the judging extremely challenging according to Oro Valley Post 132 Commander Ed Davis.

Alex Kate Halvey won first place.  The winners of second, third, and fourth place were Kaylan Fodor, Adan Moreno, and Elle Uldrich, respectively.

The top three places will advance to the district level competition to be held at American Legion McCulloch-Wagner Post 109 in Corona, Arizona.

The primary purpose of the contest is to instill a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the United States Constitution among high school students.  The program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.

Since the program’s inception, the American Legion has awarded nearly $4 million in scholarships to the participants at the national level of competition. Monetary awards are given to the winning contestants at each level of competition leading up to the national level to be held this year in Indianapolis April 13-15.
