The Tucson Fire Department responded to a building fire in the 5800 block of East Speedway after multiple calls were made to 9-1-1 by passers-by reporting heavy black smoke coming from the building.

The initial engine company arrived on scene at TD's Showclub and confirmed that heavy smoke was coming from the building and they would be pulling hose lines into the building for a quick search and fire extinguishment.

Two crews entered the building but encountered smoke banked all the way down to the floor and near zero visibility conditions.  They also stated they were dealing with multiple wires hanging down from a drop ceiling, a major safety issue which can entangle firefighters.

The ladder crew went to the roof and cut a hole as quickly as possible to allow the  smoke to escape and increasing the visibility for the interior personnel.  The firefighters inside encountered fire as soon as they passed through an entry way and into the main portion of the building.

They extinguished the flames and continued searching to ensure no one was inside.  The search was all clear with the business being closed at the time of the fire.

Nine units and twenty-three firefighters responded to the scene and controlled the fire within seventeen minutes of arriving. There were no injuries to firefighters and Red Cross was not needed.

The cause and origin of the fire are currently being investigated.  Building Safety was on scene but a damage estimate had not been made.  The building did sustain smoke damage throughout and will be closed for an extended period.
