Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, along with husband Mark Kelly, continue to make the rounds, urging Congress to pass a bill that would require universal background checks before purchasing a gun.

On Wednesday, Giffords returned to the Safeway on the corner of Ina and Oracle roads where she was shot in the head two years ago. Giffords was among 13 injured and six killed in the Jan. 8, 2011 shooting rampage.

Several other survivors of the shooting stood behind Giffords and Kelly as they continue to urge local Congressman such as Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., to get behind such legislation.

The culprit of the Jan. 8 shooting, Jared Lee Loughner, has pleaded guilty and will spend the rest of his life behind bars in a mental health facility in Missouri.

On Wednesday, Kelly said had universal background checks been in place, he doesn’t believe Loughner would have been able to get his hands on a gun.

By having universal background checks in place, it would make it more difficult for just anyone to buy a gun at events such as a gun show.

Giffords and Kelly have also started a gun control organization called "Americans for Responsible Solutions." Through the organization, Giffords and Kelly have been appearing in television advertisements that are urging Arizona residents to call Flake’s office and ask that he support universal background checks.

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to discuss ways to reduce gun violence, including the implementation of universal background checks.
