Come to the July 4 Independence Day Walk at Pima Animal Care Center and help give our pets a little liberty of their own.

With the shelter closed for the holiday, volunteers at Pima Animal Care Center help make sure our pets stay healthy and hopeful while they’re waiting for new homes.

If you have an hour or two to take a stroll or a jog around scenic Silverbell Lake, we have a dog that would love to keep you company. The walk starts at 8 a.m.

Please RSVP to by July 2 to let us know you’re coming so we can have enough trained volunteers on hand. Participants must be at least 16 years of age.

We also ask that you bring a picture ID to help us keep track of our pups and leashes!

For those who are interested in volunteering on a more regular basis, there’s an open house from 11 a.m. until noon. And just in case you fall in love, there also will be adoptions from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Our adoption special will be $13 for our adult dogs and cats, in honor of the first 13 colonies that set us on our path to freedom.

If you have any spare blankets or towels, we can always put them to good use. Ditto with cans of dog or cat food.

Pima Animal Care Center would also like to take this time to remind folks that the squeals, flashes and booms of fireworks can be very frightening for animals.

Pima Animal Care Center recommends not sharing the experience with your pet if you’re going to see the fireworks. They’ll be more comfortable in familiar surroundings, with soothing music playing in the background.

Please make sure all outside gates are latched. And if your pet does happen to escape in a panic, make sure to check with our shelter, as well as with the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.
