The delayed North La Cañada Drive widening project is now costing its contractor $2,500 a day.
Pima County Department of Transportation deputy director Ana Olivares confirmed that the county is levying the assessment against Select Development, which passed its July 1 contract end date without completing the 2.7-mile project, by garnishing its payments to the company.
As of Monday, Select had racked up 13 additional work days, equaling $32,500 in liquidated damages.
The $18.75 million La Cañada project, which will expand the stretch between West River and Ina roads to a four-lane, median-separated arterial, has been under construction since May 2012. It was supposed to be completed this April, then June. Now the substantial completion date is Aug. 11, Olivares said.
The discovery of utility lines has contributed to the delays. The county had previously granted 49 days’ worth of time extensions.
In other northwest-side road projects:
Magee Road between Oracle Road and La Cañada, currently under construction, is about a year away from completion, said Jim DeGrood, deputy director of the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA). Pima County hopes to continue improvements between Thornydale Road and Camino de Oeste using bond dollars, completing Magee improvements between Oracle and roughly Silverbell roads.
Improvements to Tangerine Road between Dove Mountain/Twin Peaks and La Cañada are currently in the design phase and about two to three years from construction. This $45 million leg is funded by RTA along with Marana and to a lesser extent Pima County and Oro Valley.
The four-lane bridge on La Cholla over the Cañada de Oro is done.
The Arizona Department of Transportation recently started a widening project on Oracle north of Tangerine, but the RTA is contributing to linkages that allow wildlife to make the trek from the Tortolita Mountains to the Catalinas, which is separated by Oracle.
