Pima Community College’s Respiratory Care program is accepting applications for fall 2014 classes beginning Aug. 26.

Pima’s Respiratory Care program is one of the College’s oldest offerings, beginning in 1969, and its first program leading to an associate of arts degree.

The program prepares students to work closely with physicians in the evaluation and treatment of people who experience problems breathing and people who suffer from cardiopulmonary disorders, such as asthma and emphysema.

Pima’s Respiratory Care program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.  Pima’s virtual intensive care hospital room provides near real-world experience. It is furnished with state-of-the-art simulation technology and equipment, including a robotic mannequin.

Graduates are eligible to take respiratory therapist entry-level national board exams and may also transfer 90 credit hours of coursework towards a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy at Northern Arizona University.

This allows students planning to earn their baccalaureate in respiratory therapy to save money, said Jeff Miller, chair of PCC’s Respiratory Care program.  Students in Tucson can complete their bachelor’s degree online by taking 30 credit hours of coursework.

Respiratory Care is a promising field.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Projections, respiratory therapists’ positions are projected to increase 19 percent by 2022, faster than the average for all occupations.

Now is the time to enroll and take care of application, testing and program entrance requirements.

To get more information about PCC’s Respiratory Care program, attend a Health Related Professions Program Information Session.  Registration for the fall semester begins April 7.
