Through a $180,000 grant, which paid for training and equipment, the Marana Police Department is sporting some new equipment.

During a special ceremony last week, the Town of Marana unveiled new Victory Motorcylces and a Chevy SUV that will be used as part of the DUI enforcement program.

Using the grant funding, the equipment was purchased from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).

Town officials said the new vehicles are part of an ongoing commitment from the State of Arizona to the town.

In implementing the DUI enforcement program, the Town of Marana has not had an alcohol- or drug-related motor-vehicle death since 2008.

The motorcycles were manufactured in Tucson and are the first of their kind nationwide. The bikes are larger, safer and less expensive to maintain than the BMW vehicles presently used by officers. The “Stealth” models are beyond unique with a black matte finish that makes them look like something out of a “Batman” movie, according to town officials.

“It’s a mean-looking bike because we mean business when it comes to keeping our community safe,” said Marana Chief of Police Terry Rozema.

The Chevy Tahoe is the town’s first DUI enforcement vehicle. The department plans to roll out the SUV during Labor Day Weekend, a time when 564 people were arrested across the state for DUI last year, according to GOHS statistics.
