Father, son injured in gravel pit rollover last night

A 28 year-old man was critically injured and his 5-year-old son sustained serious injuries after the pick-up truck they were in rolled over last night.

Northwest Fire crews along with deputies from the Pima County Sherriff’s Department were called to a cement plant gravel pit located west of Interstate 10 and Sunset Road just after 11:30 pm when bystanders came across a pick-up truck that had rolled over in the pit area.  The 28-year-old male driver was reported to have been ejected from the truck.  He sustained critical, life-threatening injuries.  The driver’s son was also in the truck at the time of the accident and sustained serious injuries that are considered non-life threatening.

The critically injured driver was transported by air to the trauma center at University of Arizona Medical Center.  Crews had to use four-wheel drive vehicles to reach the accident site as the larger fire apparatus would not safely reach the scene.  The victims were carried approximately 100 yards to an ambulance and then brought to the helicopter-landing site where the father was loaded into the helicopter to be transported to the trauma center.  The 5-year-old child remained in the ground ambulance for the transport to the hospital.

The Pima County Sherriff’s Department traffic unit was en-route to the scene to conduct an investigation into the cause of the incident.

Northwest Fire District reminds everyone to always wear seatbelts at all times.  Children must always be in appropriate safety restraint devises for their height and weight.
